Getting Here

Orkney is accessible via air or sea.

The main airport is Kirkwall Airport which has daily flights to and from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Sumburgh.  Flights are operated by Logan Air and can be booked through FlyBe.  If you are flying from outside of Scotland it is also worth checking whether it is cheaper to book direct with British Airways as they can sometime provide a better deal.  The airport is located just to the southeast of Kirwall itself, about 16 miles (26 km) from The Cottage.  Car Hire is available from the airport.

Via sea, there are four ferry options.  Northlink Ferries operate a daily service between Scrabster (near Thurso on the north coast of mainland Scotland) and Stromness (14 miles, 22.5 km) and an alternate overnight sailing from Aberdeen to Hatston near to Kirkwall (11.5 miles 18.5 km).  See www.northlinkferries.co.uk.

Pentland Ferries (www.pentlandferries.co.uk) operate a daily service from Gills Bay near John O'Groats to St Margaret's Hope in South Ronaldsay (27 miles 43.5 km).

Finally, the John O'Groats ferry (www.jogferry.co.uk) operates a summer only, foot passenger service from John O'Groats to Burwick at the south end of South Ronaldsay (33 miles 53km).

Absolutely fantastic cottage, well appointed, with gracious helpful hosts. Location is perfect equidistant from Stromness and Kirkwall, just private and away from noise and hustle bustle of the towns ...
